Description
Eric Ravilious (1903-1942) was an English painter, designer, book illustrator and wood engraver. He grew up in Sussex, and is particularly known for his watercolours of the South Downs. He was commissioned as a war artist, but sadly died when his aircraft was lost off Iceland.
Sawbridgeworth in Hertfordshire, England, was one of many temporary airfields that were quickly constructed on farmland during World War II. This one served as both a flying school for 'Tiger Moths' and as base for Number 2 Squadron RAF. The scene shows 'Tomahawks' coming in over the spire of Thorley Church, and was painted in 1942.
