Description
Hereford United v Newcastle United was a soccer match played on 5 February 1972 at Edgar Street, Hereford, England. Hereford won 2-1 after extra time.
The match was an FA Challenge Cup Third Round Replay. The original match in Newcastle had resulted in a 2–2 draw.
The replay itself was postponed three times because of bad weather and eventually took place on the day allocated for fourth-round matches.
The match went to extra time after a 1-1 draw after 90 minutes. England International Malcolm MacDonald had headed Newcastle into the lead in the 82nd minute but then in the 85th minute Ronnie Radford had unleashed a famous 30 yard equaliser that sailed into the top corner of the goal.
The winning goal arrived in the 103rd minute when Radford found Dudley Tyler who hit a powerful pass to Ricky George who turned and shot. It evaded a challenge from defender Bobby Moncur, went past goalkeeper Willie McFaul and into the far corner.
The stunned Newcastle players could not respond and Hereford held on for their most famous victory.
The result is notable for being the greatest shock of all time in the history of the FA Cup. Hereford United were the lowest-ranked non-league side to beat a top-flight opposition in English footballing history.
At the time, Hereford United were playing in the Southern Football League, the fifth tier of the English football league system. Newcastle United were playing in the English First Division, the equivalent of The Premier League today.
Edgar Street was packed to its 14,313 capacity for the match, with every vantage point taken. There were even spectators in trees and standing on floodlight pylons. It is unknown what the exact attendance was, as Hereford had also printed extra tickets, but was estimated to be well over 16,000.
