Eric Ravilious (1903-1942) was an English painter, designer, book illustrator and wood engraver. He grew up in Sussex, and is particularly known for his watercolours of the South Downs. He was commissioned as a war artist, but sadly died when his aircraft was lost off Iceland.
The scene depicts RAF Sawbridgeworth in Hertfordshire, England, in 1942. The base was home to Number 2 Squadron RAF, which is the world's oldest. It had been formed in 1912 and specialized in reconnaissance, which it continued in 1939. It was equipped with American 'Mustang' fighter aircraft which were too slow for European combat, but ideal for observation and photography. The spitfires belonged to North Weald and were used to allow the pilots familiarisation with fighter tactics.
