Artist's Description

'Le Rire' was a popular French satirical journal filled with excellent drawings by prominent artists. It featured full-page chromotypographs on the front and back covers of which this is a restored and adjusted reproduction.

Adrien Barrere (baptised 'Adrien Baneux') (1877 1931) was a French poster artist active during the Belle Epoque. He designed a large number of posters for Parisian cinemas and Le Theatre du Grand-Guignol, and was also regular contributor to 'Le Rire'.
Available up to 21 by 30 inches.

This image depicts the great French boxer Georges Carpentier (the 'Orchid Man') on the occassion of his match against Jeremiah "Joe" Jeannette (also Jennette) in 1914. Carpentier lost this fight but would go on to win the World Light-Heavyweight title against Battling Levinsky in 1920.
